Having lately developed my studio practice it's time to look at the live side, so with a big gig on the horizon I'll use this Pact to lay the groundwork for Dorian Live.

Notating for Live and Launchpad

AJ Pact | Dorian Live | Notating for Live and Launchpad

It has come to the time when I need to figure out how to notate for Live/Launchpad, and having given it some thought there may be a workable solution.

The Novation Launchpad controller is set up by default to work around Ableton Live's concept of launching clips – individual sections of audio, MIDI or automation. The controller's 8x8 grid of illuminating buttons corresponds to the current tracks and clips set up in the Live session. So I needed to come up with a three-dimensional system for scoring Live clip launching (Live track (Launchpad X-axis), track clip (Launchpad Y-axis) and, of course, time).

My solution is decent enough. It uses the typical musical stave and note values: pitch position on the stave relates to the clip to play, or the Launchpad's Y-axis (using E above middle-C as clip 1); by each note-head there is a number which refers to the track. Rhythm is handled by using the standard note types.

If the same clip needs to be triggered on two tracks at once, the track numbers are separated by a colon (for individual track numbers) or a tilde (for a range of track numbers): so, 1:3 means trigger the denoted clip on tracks 1 and 3; 2~4 means trigger on tracks 2, 3 and 4.

As a nice little flourish, the stave that is being notated uses a different clef: one reminiscent of the Ableton Live logo (sans lettering). Fun, I know.

Now to head into MuseScore and see if I can get this notation system working in some way. Wish me luck.
