Day 1, and pretty much a warm up for me. First on the agenda was to become comfortable with Final Cut Pro X; particularly, I wanted to understand how blending modes and effects are applied to video clips.

I searched Vimeo's Creative Commons videos for "VHS abstract", which yielded a film called The Oneironauts - Control by Mike Scholz. This provided the material.

With a snippet chosen pretty much at random I went to explore the UI, did some blending, reversing and speed altering. So far so good!

This approach has made me realise a direction for the next few days. I'm very interested in altering the blending mode between layers, and the idea of layering very similar clips on top of each other is where I'm going to go from here.
