With the Native Instruments Maschine Studio as focal point, this year I will generate a new sonic idea each day, towards a post-Pact electronic music release.

Turnrover, first frustrations

07/08/14

Today I turned my direction to something a bit more experimental, and came up with Turnrover. This came out of having a play with the slice function of the Maschine sampler, which slices the loaded audio at detected transients and assigns those slices to different pads. On top of that I layered some arpeggiatic synth.

Overall I feel I could have done better with this one, especially in the integration of the synth part in the mix. At least though it lays the marker for the more experimental output I was hoping to aim for with this project (something akin to tracks 2, 4 and 6 of Lost Zoyd's Threshold).

Also, today was the first time I became frustrated with the Maschine Studio. Having set up the original sample loop I then copied it in order to layer a gated, high-pass filtered version on top. When getting ready to bounce the session I noticed that this version had somehow vanished entirely, and at a point where undoing was not going to help me. Annoyed, I recreated the part, getting somewhat close to that which had been erased.

The problem I feel was that the effect of this erase command was not manifested in a noticeable way when it occurred; really, some kind of safeguard should be added to the Maschine software to mitigate such circumstances.
