CreativePact (32 posts)
The focal point for my first CreativePact is the image editing package Pixelmator, a lightweight and low-cost rival to Photoshop.

Project intro
With less than one week to go before the start of CreativePact I have decided to switch my focus for the pact from the Processing visual programming language to the Renoise music tracker.
-
nest i
Having really struggled with Renoise today (on the plane to NYC) I instead decided to do images in Pixelmator today. I found it so enjoyable that I might switch the pact to it, but let's see how it goes. I call this one nest i. Its source is a photograph I took of some tree branches, and the processing is based around multiple layers of the same image applied with different blending modes.
-
grids iii
This one I have called grids iii: it was generated from a photograph of an old radiator installed in St. Paul's Hall on the University of Huddersfield campus. Again I was experimenting with multiple layering and blending modes, but I also used Pixelmator's 'Affine Clamp' process.

Switch to Pixelmator
Alas, I have changed my CreativePact project focus again, having found that Renoise and I don't really get on – I don't mean to deride Renoise, it's just its strengths don't align with my current sonic arts methods. Apologies and thanks to Sam Birkhead for all his help in trying to spur me on with it!

leaves ii
Today my work has been created from a picture of fallen leaves on a wet road - it is called leaves ii. I've noticed a certain imperfect symmetry developing in these pieces, brought about layer rotation/flipping allied with the layer blending process. Let's see how these develop over the month.
-
temple ii
Continuing on with a similar direction here is temple ii, processed from a photo of the iron-beamed ceiling of The Temperance pub in Putney, London. I'm not really that satisfied with it to be honest, I feel it doesn't have the depth or detail of leaves ii or nest i – this one looks better when zoomed out a bit.
-
levels iii
Actually, having looked back at yesterday's image it's not too bad, though still a bit too symmetrical for my liking. Today's, called levels iii, has been processed from a photo of the Queensgate multi-storey car park, opposite the University of Huddersfield campus. This time I tried scaling out one of the copied layers – it's a technique I'll probably try again with some other images.
-
clr ii
Seeing as I've taken the same approach to the last five days I thought it might be a good idea to learn some new Pixelmator techniques. I tried a tutorial but found the approach it took to be quite 'closed' - it just explains step-by-step how to recreate an image he has already created, there are no notes regarding the significance of the process.
-
c-scratch iii
A multi-coloured one today, the processing applied to a photo of a metal utility box situated along the canal towpath near King's Cross Station in London. It is called c-scratch iii.
-
bks v
Here we go, slightly later than my others! It's bks v, processed from books stacked in a second-hand book shop window in Putney, London. Because the books formed a near horizontal/vertical grid I tried to make the image quasi-isometric, using this tutorial. Then I did my layering thing.
-
wall strip i
A bit of a change for me today, as I decided to generate my starting material and not use a photograph. This is a very rudimentary first go (not much time free today as I've been otherwise busy): it's called wall strip i.
-
psych i
A continuation on my generated material direction, this is a psychedelic one which I have to admit I rushed because I have to go out soon! This one is called psych i, and was created from two generations of stripes processed with distortions and colour gradients, and finally layer blended.
-
c-grids ii
This is a bit more like it. I was more focussed on this image, called c-grids ii, made from a generated curved grid. Also, I was inspired by a new album I bought last night, Rifts by Oneohtrix Point Never, which really got me into a good frame of mind.
-
bubbles iv
A special treat for today's image! Scott McLaughlin suggested I describe my processes in more detail, which led to the idea of doing a little video showing the creation of the image... so that is what I have done!
-
checks ii
No video today, I wanted to take my time without the pressure of videoing. Also today I wanted to create an image from two different generated sources, but my eventual choice wasn't that great - a checkerboard and a sun streak. I found the sun streak to be a difficult material to use as it enforces particular directional lines which weren't where I wanted them, and it looks kind of tacky. However, the image isn't too bad – it's called checks ii.
-
colour-checks i
Starting to get frustrated by the limitations of the generators in Pixelmator... checkerboards, stripes, and some very limited grid and 'wall' generators (the last two are Quartz generators supplied by Apple). So another checkerboard one today, thought I'd go to town on the colours because I had no other ideas. It's called colour-checks i.
-
iain-h i
Decided to move on today to focus on photos with people in them as material - although Pixelmator's generators caught my attention for a bit they are just soooo inflexible at the generation stage. I attempted some brush-based generation today and gave up for the same reason.
-
leaves and branches i
A simple one today, called leaves and branches i. It has a three step process:
-
TPIR72
Today I decided to play one of my joker cards and do something totally different - I made a video, called TPIR72. It is an experiment featuring a seemingly ever-continuing audio loop placed over an unrelated video source, inspired by the video 'nobody here' by Oneohtrix Point Never.
-
adam inward warp
A self-portrait today! It is called adam inward warp, and is the result of five progressively enlarging 'bump' distortions placed over one another using 'lighten' blending. It is really is quite grotesque.
-
waves ii
Back to something more like I was creating in the first week of CreativePact: waves ii. Nothing much to say about it really.
-
leaf line i
I continued today with the simplist processing scheme favoured by Scott McLaughlin. This one is called leaf line i. I have a creation video for this one too:
-
leaf line ii
Today I took yesterday's effort a little further (though this time without a video) and have created leaf line ii. As common with my approach, yesterday's image was layered, rotated, resized and blended in a number of ways – it probably would've been more interesting to do a video of this one!
-
distsmcl i
I decided to use a photo with a person in it today, that person being Scott McLaughlin. The original photo features Scott in St. Paul's Hall, Huddersfield, working the HISS computer. The new image is fairly disturbing, so I have called it distsmcl i.
-
benches i
With today's image I actually did a second stage of processing but then decided that I was happier with just the first stage, so that is what I'm presenting. It is called benches i.
-
patterning ii
In creating yesterday's image I found a flexible method of generating a screen of straight lines in Pixelmator (Filter -> Halftone -> Line Screen…) so decided today to create something with generated material. And here's the result: patterning ii.
-
aquarium i
Back to photographic material, this time a photo of a restaurant taken through a fish tank. The result is aquarium i.
-
railing i
Further photographic processings, this time with railing i. The original photograph depicts a guard railing located outside Tesco in Huddersfield, by the ring road. This image mixes rotational and mirror symmetries.
-
girder i
Today a simple processing of a photograph taken on one of my extended jaunts with Scott Hewitt. The original is of a girder beneath the rail line between Huddersfield and Leeds, and the processed image is called girder i.
-
garden path i
In this penultimate CreativePact post I present garden path i, processed from a photograph of my dad's rainy garden path taken in the evening. I'll confess that there's nothing new in my treatment of the original material, it follows the processing paradigms I've been following for the last few weeks.

flower i
It's the final CreativePact post! So here is flower i and now I will sign off!
