Man and Maschine

CreativePact (33 posts)
With the Native Instruments Maschine Studio as focal point, this year I will generate a new sonic idea each day, towards a post-Pact electronic music release.

Man and Maschine: prologue
As August revolves into view it's time to batten down the hatches and arm the CreativePact cannon. In this prologue I'll briefly explain my approach to this Pact.
-
Cagey, and relearning Maschine
CreativePact 2014 begins! And for day one I have produced this slice of noisy loopage, called Cagey, which is a good starting point.
-
Shortfall, getting to grips
Day 2 and my feel for the Maschine Studio is improving, and proof is in today's pudding – the urban-leaning Shortfall.
-
Satellights
Getting into it on day 3, and really enjoying using the Maschine Studio. Today's idea is called Satellights, a jaunty little number set in an 11/8 time signature.
-
Turnrover, first frustrations
Today I turned my direction to something a bit more experimental, and came up with Turnrover. This came out of having a play with the slice function of the Maschine sampler, which slices the loaded audio at detected transients and assigns those slices to different pads. On top of that I layered some arpeggiatic synth.

Ultima, going atmospheric
Yesterday, I turned the Pact towards the direction I had originally envisaged for this project, and while I wasn't blown away by the results, a marker had been laid. Continuing with that course today I came up with a much better musical nugget, called Ultima.
-
Oberlong, atmospheric continuations
Continuing along on the atmospheric electronic path brings Oberlong, a spooky number including some MIDI choir and guitar from the Maschine library.
-
Tensor, a short break
Heading into trip-hop territory (which is not unusual for me), I present Tensor, a snippet which returns to having a beat of some kind after I spent the last few days in atmospheric-land.
-
Bosnorth, return from break
I have returned from my break, and recommencing my CreativePact here for you is another trip-hoppy number called Bosnorth.
-
Grahnel, mini struggles
Today I ended up producing an atmospheric tidbit called Grahnel, but not without some creative direction struggles along the way.
-
Jquake, working process
And that's more like it! Following some minor struggles yesterday, I have bounced back with a fleshed out textural number called Jquake, which I'm really satisfied with.
-
Duckie, pushing on through
The lesson of today's CreativePact session is to push on through – it took some coaxing but the result came with the punchy beatness of Duckie.
-
Yotta, rockin' out
Today's CreativePact session produced Yotta, an energetic number that, on relistening, kind of reminds me of Discovery-era Daft Punk (not that I aimed for such a style).
-
Thndrcr, not enough time
Following a run of good CreativePact days it was inevitable that a troubled one would rear its head. Today was that day, with the result being named Thndrcr.
-
Thndrcr 2, re-imagination
What a difference a day makes. Following a time-constrained Pact session yesterday, I've been able to apply myself more effectively this time around, coming up with Thndrcr 2 in the process.
-
Junip, more on ‑otron
Anyone following my CreativePact may have noticed the development of a number of atmospheric ideas throughout the first 15 days, and today they are joined by the spooky trip-hop creation Junip.
-
Brusor, lacklustre effort
'Meh' was the feeling today after a long CreativePact session ended with poor musical results. Brusor is a mix of sample, beats and bass line that I just couldn't get working.
-
Erinn, better sample choice
Following yesterday's woes I returned with a fresh head and the task to be more selective in sample choice. The result is the moody and rhythmic Erinn.
-
Irides, thoughts on Maschine-ing
The Pact rolls on and I present Irides (pronounced 'ih-ree-dees'). Not much to say on it, other than that bass drum needs a bit more work.
-
Haver, background to playable
Day 19 of CreativePact and here is Haver, which is a creepy-sounding tune in keeping with the trip-hop outputs of this project so far; it also has a great bass line.
-
Lexx, no pain on the side-chain
Today's CreativePact tune is called Lexx, and was born from messing with the gating and side-chaining capabilities available in Maschine.
-
Fondt, foundation for an album
Continuing on with CreativePact I created Fondt, and heading into the final 10 days of the Pact I feel like I have in place the foundations for a solid album to complete after Pact's end.
-
Zarge, a session of silliness
A session of silliness occurred for this CreativePact, resulting in Zarge, a kind of halfway house between drum 'n' bass and dubstep (what style is that??) which is completely different to everything else I've done in the Pact.
-
Ytasm, a different kind of struggle
I returned to struggles with this CreativePact session (well, two sessions) although the resulting track, called Ytasm doesn't betray such troubles in its sonic quality.
-
Retrorene, Maschine mixing
A rolling synthy number today called Retrorene, and this track in particular highlights some of the mixing limitations I have encountered with the stock Maschine set up.
-
Trigone, album forms
CreativePact for today comes in the form of Trigone, a floaty synth number that I do quite like. And with the end of the Pact approaching I have some thoughts on the form the post-Pact release may take.
-
Fenster, Maschine FX UIs
Day 26 of CreativePact, and here is Fenster, which, going on yesterday's categorisations, would certainly fit in the 'beaty' box.
-
Worldpulse, nearing Pact end
A return to atmosphericism today, with Worldpulse, a nice wooshy number that will compliment the non-beaty tracks created during the CreativePact.
-
Aegist, dulcet electronicism
A track I really like today in Aegist, lush and calming, and almost certain to make it onto the atmospheric side of the ‑otron release.
-
Mendel, end of school feeling
Penultimate day of my CreativePact! And I present the jittery-rhythmed Mendel, which makes use of the square wave sample pitch modulation technique I have mentioned previously.
-
Krentz, CreativePact conclusion!
The final day of my 2014 CreativePact has arrived! And to celebrate I present the kind of funky Krentz (which took two sessions to shape into something acceptable).
-
CreativePact 2014 summary, post-Pact movements
It has been almost two months since the conclusion of Man and Maschine, and amongst moving house, decorating and other things I have managed to form the material created during the Pact into the outline of an album.

Man and Maschine epilogue
On March 20th 2015, ‑otron released Voltronic/Galaxer, a two-sided LP of electronic beats and atmospheres. And also the progeny of Man and Maschine.
